Home Owner Grant

How to Apply for the Grant

The Home Owner Grant is a provincial subsidy program, administered by Home Owner Grant Administration and Municipal Collectors.  The purpose of the grant is to reduce the burden of residential property taxes on registered owners who occupy eligible residences.

To claim the basic or additional grant, property owners must meet the elilgibility requirements and complete an application form each year.  The application form is located at the bottom of your tax notice.  You can also use the electronic form FIN 78, Application for Homeowner Grant.  Application should be made prior to the due date for your property tax.

Warning: Home Owner Grant applications that are incomplete, unclaimed or late will result in penalty charges.  Grants not claimed are considered equivalent to unpaid taxes.

If your mortgage company pays your property taxes on your behalf, or if you pay by Internet or telephone banking, it is your responsibility to apply for the grant as described above. Do not send your application to your mortgage company. Make sure your mortgage company pays the correct amount of property taxes less the grant amount to which you are entitled.
